Renowned musician and composer Velu Peter Gana passed away peacefully in Chengdu, Sichuan province on Saturday morning, at the age of 82, his family announced in a statement on Tuesday.

His best-known works include Yi Jian Mei or A Spray of Plum Blossoms, Late, Ali Baba, and One Path — many of which became signature hits for some of Mandopop's biggest stars, most notably Fei Yu-ching.

Beyond love songs, he also expressed his deep connection to the Chinese mainland. In the late 1980s, he penned Wu Ai Wu Guo (or I Love My Country), reflecting on his ancestral roots. "If there is reincarnation," he wrote, "I wish to be born again, to return to China again, for I have yet to witness all her vastness."

In the early 1990s, he moved his music career to Chinese mainland. He settled in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, in 1993, and later relocated to Beijing in 2001. During this period, he began drawing inspiration from classical Chinese poetry in his songwriting.

In 2018, he appeared on a music and cultural program produced by China Central Television (CCTV), where he delivered a modern musical rendition of a poem written over 800 years ago by Xin Qiji. "Xin Qiji had a deep love for his country," he remarked. "By singing his poem, I want to tell him that the strong and proud China he dreamed of — our generation has achieved it."
