山南位于西藏自治区南部、雅鲁藏布江中游，因地处冈底斯山脉以南而得名，与印度、不丹接壤，是距离西藏自治区首府拉萨最近的地级市,是藏中南经济核心区。川藏铁路穿城而过，有西藏唯一的国际航空港和空港型国家物流枢纽贡嘎机场，现已开通国内外航线100余条，形成“空铁公”三位一体交通网络格局。

Shannan has prominent geographical advantages. Shannan is located in the south of the Xizang Autonomous Region and the middle reaches of the the Yarlung Zangbo River. It is named because it is located in the south of the Gangdisi Mountains, bordering India and Bhutan. It is the nearest prefecture-levelcityto Lhasa, the capital of the Xizang Autonomous Region, and is the core economic region of middle and southern Xizang. The Sichuan Xizang Railway runs through the city. Gongga Airport is the only international airport in Xizang and the national airport based logistics hub,which is located in Shannan. More than 100 domestic and international routes have been opened, forming a trinity transportation network pattern of "air, railway, highway".

山南素有“藏民族之宗、藏文化之源”的美誉。神猴同罗刹女结合而诞生藏民族的神话传说就发生在这里，悠久的历史孕育出了独具魅力的雅砻文化。从第一代藏王聂赤赞普到第三十三代藏王松赞干布初期，山南一直是西藏的政治经济文化中心。山南拥有西藏第一块农田、第一个村庄、第一位藏王、第一座宫殿、第一座寺庙、第一部经书、第一部藏戏等西藏历史上诸多“第一”，是重要的中华民族特色文化保护地。

Shannan is known as the "cradle of the Tibetan people and the origin of Tibetan culture". The legend of the birth of the Tibetan people through the union of a sacred monkey and a demon called Luocha takes place here, and the long history has nurtured the unique charm of the Yalong culture. Shannan has always been the political, economic and cultural center of Xizang from the first generation of Tibetan Zanpu (Tribal leaders) Niechizanpu (Tribal leaders) to the beginning of the 33rd generation of Tibetan Zanpu Songzanganbu. Shannan has many "firsts" in the history of Xizang, such as the first farmland, the first village, the first Tibetan Zanpu, the first palace, the first temple, the first scripture, the first Tibetan opera, etc. It is an important cultural protection site with Chinese characteristics.

The natural landscape here is magnificent and mysterious, and the sacred mountains and lakes are well-known. There are tourist attractions such as the towering Kula Gangri Snow Mountain, the crystal clear Yangzhuoyongcuo, the deep and peaceful Pumoyongcuo, the magical and beautiful primitive secret area Zhari, and the towering Red Tourism base Yumai. It is an excellent destination for tourism, sightseeing, and religious pilgrimage.
