Dear leaders, teachers, alumni and students, hello!
I am Chen Ruolin, a 2019 graduate of the School of Public Administration at Renmin University of China (RUC). I am also a retired diver and currently serve as a coach for the Chinese diving team.
It is an immense honor and privilege to return to my long-missed alma mater as an alumni representative today, to revisit this familiar and warm Century Gymnasium, to reunite with my mentors, and to gather with my classmates. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity.
In my life journey, there are two significant starting points: the diving pool and Renmin University of China. The former is where I chased my sports dreams and fought hard, carrying countless sweats and glories. The latter is a harbor where I broadened my horizons and cultivated my knowledge, granting me a new identity and mission. It can be said that the sports field honed my body and will, while my alma mater shaped my thoughts and soul—together, they have made me who I am today.
I started diving at the age of 4, dedicating almost my entire childhood and youth to the pool. Day after day, year after year of training, every moment of leaping from the diving platform was a battle with myself. I know that behind all the highlight moments are countless instances of grit and perseverance. Happiness is earned through struggle. Diving taught me that only through hardships can one be tempered and achieve excellence. With this spirit, after the 2016 Rio Olympics, I made a new choice: to enter university. Transitioning from an athlete to a student, I felt a bit overwhelmed in the academic environment. Many basic subjects posed new challenges to me, but I refused to give up. "Water clears when it flows over stones; people grow when faced with challenges." Pressure drives growth, whether in the sports arena or the classroom. It was this unyielding belief that inspired me to persist in the unknown and rise up in adversity.
Diving and studying are both essentially journeys of perseverance and breakthrough. A diving move requires thousands of repetitions to master; a course requires repeated study to understand thoroughly. RUC’s motto, "Seek Truth from Facts," is not just a slogan but a spirit deeply rooted in our hearts. It guides me to keep exploring in my studies and work, and makes me more determined and composed in life choices. Fortunately, RUC is a place full of warmth, where I have harvested countless warm memories. The earnest teachings of my teachers helped me understand the logic of public administration and the spirit of public governance. The companionship and care of my classmates made me feel the purest kindness between people.
I still remember that in class, everyone affectionately called me "Sister Lin." After class, they often gathered around me and asked, "Sister Lin, what do you want to eat today?" My classmates always shared snacks from home with me. These warm moments have become the most precious parts of my memory. After completing my studies, I chose to return to the diving field I love. This time, I am no longer an athlete but a coach. At RUC, I learned to view sports with a broader perspective. Public administration courses taught me that behind every gold medal lie systematic support, scientific training, and teamwork. My experiences as a referee in international competitions and as a coach designing training programs all rely on the intellectual framework provided by my alma mater. Education has transformed me from an athlete pursuing personal breakthroughs to a coach nurturing the team’s future, and has made me understand that the ultimate goal of sports is to inject positive energy into society and inspire more people to pursue their dreams bravely. I once said, "I don’t want my team members to take the detours I did." Every time I stand by the training ground and watch the athletes I coach surpass themselves again and again, I recall my classmates who struggled alongside me during my time at RUC and those students who gave their all on the road to their dreams. They carry a spiritual essence I know well: focus, tenacity, and never giving up. This spirit is the source of strength I always strive to pass on to the next generation.
Today, as we gather again through the global alumni conference, it is like a relay race in the Olympic Games. We may come from all corners of the world and hold different positions, but each of us is running hard on our own path,默契配合 (tacitly cooperating) in the relay zone of passing on traditions, and jointly striving for "higher, faster, stronger—together." Dear alumni, no matter where we are or how our identities change, we will always be RUCers, carrying a responsibility to our country and society. I wish to walk alongside all alumni here, responding to the times with action and striving together for the happiness of RUCers and all Chinese people! May we always remember the校训 of "Seek Truth from Facts" and pursue excellence in our respective fields! Finally, I sincerely wish this conference a complete success and our alma mater continued prosperity and countless achievements!
Thank you!
